I've located yet another character you played who wants to have a word with you. As you may remember, near the end of your 1988 film "Twins" your character Julius went into business with his brother Vincent. If you have kept in touch with them at all over the last 18 years, you know that they had become very successful at their various manufacturing concerns, but in recent years, mainly due to soaring health insurance costs and fierce foreign competition, they have been showing steady losses, and have recently, very reluctantly, had to "restructure" and lay off thousands of employees. True to character, Julius probably won't complain about his personal situation, but he does want to have a word with you as a businessman.
Dear Governor:
I find it hard to grasp that a man I felt so close to, who played me in a hit movie, would---now that he is in a position of power--- take such a short-sighted view of our dismal healthcare situation as it relates to American and Californian businesses. Businesses here can no longer compete on a level playing field with our foreign counterparts in countries that have national health-insurance systems. Why, it costs General Motors $1500 per vehicle---more than the steel they use!---to keep up with their healthcare costs. Similarly, foreign businesses are reluctant to invest here for the same reason, as witness Toyota's recent decision to build a major plant in Canada rather than the US. Please think of the business community in general, and not just that particular special interest / big campaign contributor the health insurance industry, and SIGN SB-840!
Sincerely,
Julius Benedict, c/o Vern Nelson, (714) 235-VERN
